Name: Consideration of Resolution authorizing the expenditure of $1,000 from the City Council Discretionary Account to support Carmel’s American Legion Post 512.

Description: American Legion Post 512, located on Dolores Avenue, is an important organization that has served military veterans in the area since 1920 through its numerous charitable activities. Members of Post 512 stage the annual Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day events at Devendorf Park which includes printing the programs and making all the arrangements for program participants as well as providing color guard service at many annual City-sponsored events including the City’s Halloween/Birthday Celebration and Parade. Recently, Post 512 purchased a new California State flag to replace the faded one at Devendorf Park.

Staff Recommendation: Adopt the Resolution.

Important Considerations: Since being chartered in 1920, American Legion Post 512 has provided valuable services to area veterans and to the broader Carmel-by-the-Sea community.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA AUTHORIZING THE EXPENDITURE OF $1,000 FROM THE CITY COUNCIL DISCRETIONARY ACCOUNT TO SUPPORT CARMEL’S AMERICAN LEGION POST 512

WHEREAS, since 1920, Carmel American Legion Post 512 has been an important
organization serving area veterans and their families through its many charitable activities; and

WHEREAS, members of Post 512 stage the annual Memorial Day and Veterans’
Day events at Devendorf Park which includes printing the programs and making all the arrangements for program participants; and

WHEREAS, Post 512 recently purchased a new California State flag to replace the faded one at Devendorf Park; and

WHEREAS, American Legion Post 512 provides its color guard at the City’s annual special events including the City’s Halloween/Birthday Celebration and Parade; and

WHEREAS, sufficient funds exist in the City Council Discretionary Account to cover this expense.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA DOES:

1. Authorize the expenditure from the City Council Discretionary Account #01-
60207 in the amount of $1,000 to support Carmel’s American Legion Post 512.
