Name: Consideration of a Resolution granting a one-day exception to Chapter 8.56 of the Municipal Code (Noise Regulation) for the “Run in the Name of Love” special event scheduled for Sunday, June 19, 2011.

Description: The event organizers for the “Run in the Name of Love” special event, scheduled for
Sunday, June 19, 2011, have requested to use amplified sound at the Sunset Center
parking lot to make race announcements during the event, beginning at 8:00 a.m. In
order to do so, Council must grant a one-day exception to Chapter 8.56 of the Municipal
Code, the section that governs noise regulations.

Grant Funds: N/A
Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends granting a one-day exception to this section of the
Municipal Code to allow for announcements to be broadcast during this special
event.
Important Considerations: Notices were sent to homeowners in the proximity of the Sunset Center on
January 20, 2011, informing them of the public hearing on this subject. Furthermore, a
copy of the notice was sent to the Carmel Chamber of Commerce and the Carmel
Residents Association, asking them to notify people outside the mailing radius who may
have an interest in this.
Decision Record: City Council gave its approval to the “Run in the Name of Love” event at its meeting
of June 8, 2010.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
GRANTING A ONE-DAY EXCEPTION TO CHAPTER 8.56
OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE (Noise Regulation) FOR THE
“RUN IN THE NAME OF LOVE SPECIAL EVENT
SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 19, 2011
WHEREAS, Chapter 8.56 of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Municipal Code governs noise
regulations throughout the City; and
WHEREAS, the organizers of the “Run in the Name of Love” special event, scheduled
for June 19, 2011 have requested use of amplified sound to make announcements throughout
their event at the Sunset Center parking lot, beginning at 8:00 a.m. that day; and
WHEREAS, the City Council approved the “Run in the Name of Love” event at its
meeting on June 8, 2010.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA DOES:
1. Approve granting a one-day exception to Chapter 8.56 of the Municipal Code for the
purposes of this special event on Sunday, June 19, 2011.
