Name: Consideration of a Resolution approving two of the City’s free use days at the Sunset Center Theater during the period from September 24-27, 2009 for the Carmel Authors and Ideas Festival.

Description: The organizers of the Carmel Authors and Ideas Festival have requested use of two of the City’s free use days at the Sunset Theater for this year’s event, scheduled to run from September 24-27, 2009. This annual festival brings together a host of world-renowned authors and other luminaries in a small setting, allowing for considerable audience interaction with the various speakers. Because of its tremendous popularity, the event has been extended by one day this year. Attendees come from around the globe to this event, and the positive publicity it generates for the City is significant.

Staff Recommendation: Adopt the Resolution.

Important Considerations: The City is granted five “free use” days each fiscal year. At the April 7, 2009 City Council meeting, the Carmel Foundation received approval to use one of the City’s free days for a mid-week event in September. This will leave two more “free use” days for the City between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA APPROVING THE USE OF THE SUNSET CENTER THEATER FOR TWO DAYS FOR THE CARMEL AUTHORS AND IDEAS FESTIVAL, SEPTEMBER 24-27, 2009

WHEREAS, the City has a total of five free use days available each fiscal year for non-profit civic organizations that provide a public service to the Carmel community; and

WHEREAS, the Carmel Authors and Ideas Festival brings world-renowned authors and luminaries to the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and;

WHEREAS, the event brings many people from around the world into the City to attend the event and casts the City in a favorable light by virtue of its international stature.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA DOES:

1. Approve two of the City’s “free use” days of the Sunset Center Theater for the Carmel Authors and Ideas Festival, scheduled to run from September 24-27, 2009.
