Meeting Date: June 8, 2010
Prepared by: Heidi Burch, City Clerk

City Council
Agenda Item Summary

Name: Receive report and provide policy direction on a proposed 5K and 2K Run/Walk sponsored by the Big Sur International Marathon’s Just Run! Program on June 19, 2011.

Description: The Big Sur International Marathon’s Just Run! program has proposed a 5K and 2K Run and Walk through Carmel-by-the-Sea for Sunday, June 19, 2011 (Fathers’ Day). The run, to be called “Run in the Name of Love”, honors Brian Love, a 2001 Carmel High School graduate, who died tragically in 2005 while a student at the University of Virginia. Proceeds from the run will benefit both youth arts programs in the local schools and the Big Sur Marathon’s youth fitness program, Just Run!, which
promotes healthy lifestyles and physical activity in children. The proposed course maps are included as Exhibits “A” and “B”.

Overall cost:
City Funds: Unknown at this time.
Grant Funds: N/A

Staff Recommendation: Approve this event for Sunday, June 19, 2011.

Important Considerations: In past years, Carmel hosted a popular 5K race, the “Fine Arts 5K”. There has been much interest in reintroducing a similar event. “Run in the Name of Love” would welcome people of all ages to participate and would benefit youth arts and fitness programs.

Decision Record: The proposed event received the approval of the Economic Advisory Committee, the Community Activities and Cultural Commission, and the Sunset Center Board of Trustees. Carmel Police Cpl. Steve Rana, who oversees special events, also met with event organizers and approves of their plans.
