Name: Consideration of a Resolution authorizing the expenditure of $1,000 from the Council’s Discretionary Account to support the general Carmel High School athletic program.

Description: At its January 5, 2010 meeting, the City Council honored members of the championship Carmel High School varsity football team with a framed certificate of recognition and presented them with a check in the amount of $1,000 for deposit into the general athletic fund at the high school. The purpose of the donation is to support all athletic teams. Carmel High currently offers 17 different sports to its students, some at both the varsity and junior varsity level.

Overall Cost:
City Funds: $1,000 from Council Discretionary Account 01-60207.

Staff Recommendation: Adopt the Resolution.

Important Considerations: Carmel High School was named a Newsweek Silver Medal School, placing it among the top 500 public high schools in the nation and in the top 2% of all California high schools. In recent years, several Carmel High School sports teams have earned championship athletic titles at the league, conference, and even statewide level.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA AUTHORIZING AN EXPENDITURE OF $1,000 FROM THE COUNCIL’S DISCRETIONARY ACCOUNT TO SUPPORT THE GENERAL CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAM

WHEREAS, Carmel High School offers 17 different sports to its students; and

WHEREAS, the athletes and coaches in these sports have represented their community with sportsmanship and distinction; and

WHEREAS, funding for high school athletic programs has become more difficult in these economic times; and

WHEREAS, there are sufficient funds in the fiscal year 2009-10 Council Discretionary budget account 01-60207.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA DOES:

1. Authorize the expenditure from the Council Discretionary account 01-60207 to the Carmel High School Athletic Department in the amount of $1,000 to support the various high school sports teams.
